My Little Sweeties

Valentine's Day was sweet at our house!

Maybe I should take this opportunity to share more widely a choice I have made. In my quest to fight disease and to have healthy futures for all of my family, we are cutting out sugar. This is kind of the 'icing on the cake' so to speak of transforming our diets to eat mostly organic, whole foods. I have been avoiding this step for a long time since I have a super strong sweet tooth, but I am learning that there are other ways to find sweetness in life!

It's okay if you think I'm the lame mom, but my girls took Valentines to school without a treat. Instead we found little ruler bookmarks they loved and found a printable that said "You Rule." They were excited about them, and they had good reviews from friends.

We still found fun ways to celebrate. We had strawberry 'milkshakes' for breakfast, and the kids each got a little gift with their kisses.

My favorite part of the day was opening the handmade Valentine's my girls have been working on for weeks! They were to thoughtful and imaginative.

Believe me, they still came home loaded up with bags of Valentine's and sugar, but I didn't want to add to that load at home. They requested their favorite tradition of heart pizza by candle light for dinner (which I loaded with kale and mushrooms under the cheese! :)

I like to say I eat sugar on my own terms. It has to be worth it. I tried a new recipe for dessert with sucanat, which comes from sugar cane but is unrefined. I know, it's still sugar but it made me feel a little better. :) The whipped cream was made from coconut milk and the raspberries made it so yummy!
Mike and I took the kids to our babysitting group, and came home for an Olympic date to watch Noelle Pikus-Pace win a silver! We are Olympic junkies around here.

Low-key as it was, I was still full to the brim with sweetness by the end of the day. I love my family!

Yummy! It is amazing what you can still make when trying to cut sugar out. I follow a ton of people o n Istagram that do just that. Now I need to try it myself! You are amazing!

I tried the coconut milk cream before and couldn't get it to work at all! Yours looks great.
