Boondock's

Mike's work party for summer is always at Boondocks, probably because it's right next to his office. But my kids never complain, they think it's awesome!

Remember last year when Ty sat right there because he was too short to ride? Jake's turn!

Maddie thought it was pretty fun to be the operator of the boat. Ella did some great flinching.

I'm not sure if Ty was flinching or praying... but after a few sprays, he didn't mind getting wet.

Little Jake was so patient, watching everything through the fence. Luckily he had a hay day eating lunch and playing games inside later, so I guess I don't feel too bad.

Next it was onto the race cars! Ty was pretty excited about these.

Maddie drove a car for the first time! Watch out people!! She took it very seriously.

Finally Ella and Mommy got a turn. She held on tight and didn't make a peep.

Ty enjoyed many games of Wack-a-Mole and the kids each got a ball out the arcade. They earned tickets for treasures... I'm always amazed at how pleased they are with the cheap junk, but I guess it's the sense of earning something they like.

From there we were off on our next adventure... literally!

My Cousin's Wedding

My cousin Cameron married beautiful Maddie last Thursday. My aunt says she is an angel and from what I can tell they make a perfect couple.

My parents, Dana, and I attended the sealing at the Salt Lake Temple. I love that place so much. It may have been the very room where I was sealed to my sweetheart... sure felt like it. They looked straight into each others eyes during the entire ceremony and it was apparent they are in love! The sealer reminded them to say "I love you" every day.

Afterward we met Landon who had baby Graham on the temple grounds and ooh and ahhed over babies until they cute couple came out.

It was fun to have Grandma, Grandpa, and baby puppy Tank to ourselves for a night.

We went to Pizzeria Limone for dinner, and then on the the reception at Gardener Village.

The kids couldn't keep still. Luckily there was plenty of dance floor and great music, so we cut a rug!

May I have this dance?

Sibling romance.

They had a fun photo booth and I took silly pictures with all the kids. Love how they turned out!

It was such a fun day of festivities and family. I love how weddings bring people together.

Summer Storms

We have been loving this wet monsoon season! We have had multiple storms in a row and our yard and garden are just soaking it up.

The kids have had a blast in the wet weather. We like to watch storms roll through on the back deck or front porch, but pretty soon the kids were out playing in the water.

The sky was still thick with black clouds and thunder on the east side, but on the west side the sun broke through and made a beautiful rainbow!

I love puddle jumping myself and couldn't keep away. Jake said oooh and wow a million times.

After he had license to be in the road though, he thought he could go wherever he wanted! Gotta keep a close eye on that monkey.

By the end of the storm there was a double rainbow. Is there anything more reminiscent of August than thunderstorms and sunflowers?

Swimming Lessons

We did our swimming lessons at American Fork pool with our cousins, Daxton and Bodie. I don't think we could have asked for better conditions! Dana and I got to sit and chat every day, and because it was the end of summer, classes were small.

Ella and Maddie were awesome. They are the ultimate bobbers. They each progressed a lot on strokes and loved diving for the rings. Maddie begged for goggles so she could see the rings better. I think positive experiences with water are so important for their confidence, so I'm happy.

This little guy took awhile to warm up. At first he just cried the whole class. On the third day, he cried the whole drive over, but then got in the pool and had a blast! From then on, he couldn't wait for the next day. His teachers were so cute. They never gave up on him and even brought match box cars to drive through the water, and let him have it at the end.

He thought it was fun to yell to me and wave, and show me how he could put his face in the water and blow bubbles.

He learned chicken, airplane, soldier, and talked about making ice cream scoops.

We are still talking about Cami and Courtney at home! And it was great to be in the same class with Bobo.

The cute little graduates.

This little bubba did pretty well, as long as he had snacks and toys to keep him busy. Swimming lessons, check!

Pioneer Week

In honor of Pioneer Day, we spent the last week talking about our Pioneer heritage, as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and also as direct descendants of many Pioneers!

Last week I came across a new feature on the Church's family history site, familysearch.org, that searches your family tree for your Pioneer ancestors.  I knew that all branches of my family tree were members of the Church, and I had heard a few stories, but I didn't realize just how many came across the plains with the Saints. As I went through the list provided, I circled them on my family tree and read records and histories about my ancestors. I was completely sucked in!

I told my kids about some of the children that crossed the plains. One of my ancestors was 1 year old, another 5, and another 7 when they came to Utah. This made it more real for them to think of leaving everything that couldn't fit in a covered wagon (pianos, tables, beds, etc, the kids suggested) and walking all the way to Utah.

Out of about 300 Pioneer companies, two of my ancestors were Captains of companies. Another ancestor named Peter Conover was a bodyguard to Joseph Smith the prophet, and then the Captain of the Nauvoo Legion. He procured rock and lumber for the Nauvoo Temple and helped to build it, and there received his temple ordinances. After Joseph's death, Peter left with the Saints and traveled in Heber C. Kimballs' company. His wife died at Winter Quarters of typhoid fever, leaving him with 10 young children. He made it to Salt Lake with the help of a widowed woman, and later re-married. He was faithful his whole life, and did many things to build up the Church in Utah as called upon by the prophet Brigham Young. He raised and cut the first grain in Utah County, worked on building a fort in Provo Valley, and headed up many Indian raids to protect the Saints.

His daughter, Sarah Elizabeth, was only 13 when she crossed the plains, and when her mother died. She was the oldest daughter and much of the care of the children and housework fell to her. Later she married Gilbert Weaver, who was also 13 when his family crossed the plains. They settled in Cache Valley, and later were asked by Brigham Young to start a settlement by Bear Lake, now known as Paris, Idaho.

When we went through Paris on our way home from our family reunion in Wyoming, we stopped at the Paris Tabernacle and saw the name Weaver on a plaque commemorating the Saints who helped to build it. I also have many ancestors on my Mom's side who settled and built up the community, including my great X4 grandfather John Ulrich Stucki, who was the first Mayor of the city. Mike also has ancestors from there, the Shepherd's.

We made little covered wagons out of paper and TP tubes. As usual, the library had tons of books on the topic and we also checked out a short movie about some pioneer children.

It was a good way to dive deeper into family history, and I still haven't made it up for air! I am so grateful for all those who have come before me and made it possible for me and my family to be members of the church. We come from some strong stock!!
